Kajeet is, appropriately enough, an acronym of the first letters of the names of the company's founders' children. For all of us who work at Kajeet, the name is a constant reminder that every day, in everything we do, we respect our customers as if they were our own kids. Plus, we just like the sound of it.
Daniel Neal and Ben Weintraub started Kajeet. Find out about their backgrounds and interests over here. Kajeet was started because we live in a technological world – there’s no escaping it! We believe technology companies need to respect students’ desires for the coolest gadgets, but also respect educators' needs to protect their students.
Today, and in the years to come, that’s exactly where Kajeet wants to be: facilitating the mutual respect students and educators have as mobile technology continues to be an essential tool for helping students navigate their world. Want to dig deeper into these sorts of ideas and issues? Check out some of the articles in our press room.
We can’t stress enough how seriously we take the issues of privacy and security of personal information of adults and kids alike. Our complete privacy policy is available here.
Nobody takes the security of your personal information more seriously than you, but at Kajeet we’re a very close second. We recognize that when you provide us with your personal information, you’re doing more than conducting business with us – you’re placing the security of your information in our hands. That’s a level of trust we don’t take for granted, which is why we’ve engineered robust security measures to protect that information, including 128-bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption by Verisign to secure the privacy data on our Web servers, firewall and intrusion detection systems designed to provide 24/7 protection of your personal information and password protection of all Kajeet systems containing sensitive information.
Our team here at Kajeet wants to make sure that each student has an equal opportunity for academic success. We are willing to work with your district to make sure that we can accommodate your budget. Depending on your needs, we can provide your students connectivity between $10-$30 dollars, per month – significantly below other non-filtered alternatives!
Typically, our contracts correspond to the school year, but we do provide personalized terms where needed. Contracts do not automatically renew; you will be contacted by your Regional Director, prior to your expiration date, to discuss your contract renewal. For questions related to contracts, please contact us. We can help get you set up with a contract that’s just right for you.
Our partner districts use many different funding resources - everything from district money and grants, to donations and federal funding. Currently, Education Broadband is not eligible for E-RATE; however, there are many other federal funding options like Title I or Title III that will help support this need.
Kajeet has created a free, online database of more than 100 grants and foundations that provide funding for education technology. Visit HomeworkGapFunding.com to find a funding source for your school's technology project!
Yes, we can work with you if you would like to change plans. Please contact your Kajeet Education Program Manager or Regional Director for more details.
1:1 programs are being deployed in districts both big and small as technology is integrated into the classroom to meet the growing demand for interactive learning. In a 1:1 program, students are issued a device from their school. Students are issued a Kajeet SmartSpot device as simply as they are issued a textbook or other educational equipment. The devices can range anywhere from an iPad and Netbook to Chromebook or laptop, etc.
BYOD is short for Bring Your Own Device. In the education technology world, BYOD is a widely-adopted phrase that refers to students who bring their own computing devices to school – such as smart phones, laptops, iPads and tablets –to use and connect on the school’s secured network. Many schools have deployed “Wi‐Fi only” devices including iPads, iPod Touches, Android Tablets, Netbooks, Laptops and even specialized devices for students with special needs. Kajeet Education Broadband allows schools and districts to realize the full potential of both 1:1 and BYOD initiatives.

No, we do not currently integrate directly with Active Directory. We do not store any student identifiable information with data we collect.
We do not have device specific authentication in place. A student connects to the SmartSpot Wi-Fi network using the SmartSpot Wi-Fi password and then is free to browse the internet. There is no authentication the student must go through before being connected to the internet. Filter groups are assigned to devices not users of those devices.
No, we do not break student’s encrypted data sessions. We do not examine or filter the content of a student’s data transmissions with a site. That site may be allowed or blocked, depending on the site’s categorization. A customer could also choose to block all SSL (though we wouldn’t advise that). We do not see the entire URL with SSL-encrypted traffic. For example, On Google or YouTube we force non-SSL and we therefore see the search queries and can apply our education-only filters.
You can check your SmartSpot device status online at this link. Simply enter your SmartSpot devices IMEI number (the number beneath the barcode on the back of your SmartSpot case).
Kajeet works with schools and districts across the nation to provide safe, filtered, and affordable mobile broadband service that connects students to the online content required to complete homework.
Education Broadband is blazing fast, mobile connectivity used exclusively for education purposes. The service is designed to block inappropriate content and minimize non-educational activities that consume bandwidth, distract students from completing school work, and drive up costs for the entire system.
We are driven to making this solution affordable so we can connect as many students as possible within limited school and district budgets.
Founded in 2003 as the nation’s premiere mobile cell phone service for kids, Kajeet has been serving the K-12 education market since 2012. We partner with schools and districts across the nation to help them power the K-12 mobile environment.
More than 650 schools and districts across the nation have implemented the Kajeet solution, and that number continues to grow every week. Take a look at a few of the schools and districts that are successfully powering their K-12 mobile environment by clicking here.
The Kajeet SmartSpot is a portable, 4G LTE hotspot each student can take home to complete required assignments and homework. It supports the latest, most advanced security and it is compatible with all industry-standard Wi-Fi capable devices across all operating systems. The SmartSpot has a long battery life, providing up to 10 hours of use on a single charge. Each Kajeet SmartSpot comes fully kitted and activated, with a custom, padded carrying case; charger; and instruction manual.
Within every school district, there are economically disadvantaged students who lack access to broadband Internet when they leave school. The Kajeet SmartSpot gives students access to online resources anytime, anywhere! The portable Wi-Fi hotspot extends the classroom by providing safe, filtered broadband access for homework assignments, class assignments, educational tools, online reference materials, and interactive tutorials.
We do allow schools and districts to bring their own devices (BYOD) as long as the device (hotspot, chromebook, tablet, laptop, etc.) is "private network certified" by one of our 6 North American wireless carriers. In these cases, we charge a one-time device activation fee and there is no need for purchase of a Kajeet SmartSpot; the Sentinel portal will work with your device. Please contact your Kajeet Regional Director or Education Program Manager to see if your device is private network certified.
Kajeet Education Broadband is purchased by the school or district and provided to students who need broadband connectivity outside of school. At this time, Kajeet Education Broadband is not available for purchase by individuals or families. We encourage concerned or interested parents to contact their School Principal or District Technology Department and inquire about Kajeet Education Broadband.
If you are an educator or administrator and interested in receiving a free demo of the Kajeet SmartSpot®, please give us a call at 1-240-482-3500 or email us at sales@kajeet.net or you can fill out the form here. One of our Education Consultants will contact you soon.
You can check the data usage linked to your account through your Sentinel® account, which provides detailed views into real-time usage totals for your program's device, destinations & managing student limits for bandwidth. With Sentinel, you can also run or schedule reports that allow you to view data usage totals and web traffic activity for your devices.
The easy-to-use, cloud-based Sentinel administrative portal allows you to manage your students’ access to specific content and websites; device data consumption limits; time-control policies; and much more!
Sentinel works in real-time to manage student traffic without customer-premise equipment (CPE). The Sentinel engine analyzes and categorizes millions of new URL’s every day and the categories include protocols used such as streaming media, P2P traffic, FTP, SSL/TLS, IMAP/POP3, etc. The system allows time-based filtering to differentiate policies at school, home or bedtime. The White & Black lists in Sentinel set rules on specific destinations and can include exceptions to broader policies.
Yes. Kajeet supports Google SafeSearch and YouTube Restricted Mode.
Google SafeSearch blocks “Adult Content” in which search results, images, and videos that have been deemed as adult content will not show up in the browser. With SafeSearch on, sexually explicit video and images will be filtered from Google Search result pages, along with results that might link to explicit content. No filter is 100% accurate, but SafeSearch should help our clients avoid most adult images and sites.
YouTube® Restricted Mode™ is a setting that helps screen out potentially objectionable content that we do not want our client’s students to stumble across while enjoying YouTube. You can think of this as a parental control setting for YouTube. While it's not 100% accurate, YouTube uses community flagging, age-restrictions, and other signals to identify and filter out inappropriate content.
PLEASE NOTE: The Kajeet Complete Plan blocks all of YouTube by default. However, if a client chooses to purchase the optional Unfiltered YouTube service, Restricted Mode will be in effect to ensure an added layer of protection.
Filtering does not occur on the device itself. Instead, the traffic is filtered over the network via our our innovative Sentinel® cloud portal. Sentinel provides customizable and filtered Internet access to keep students focused on school work and provide educational connectivity. Our CIPA-compliant, education-only filtering allows schools and districts to fully customize and filter websites that students can - or cannot – visit, as well as, set times of day or night appropriate for student use and manage access hours.
Kajeet’s offers mobile Education Broadband service on your choice of the five largest U.S. wireless networks, as well as one in Canada. Kajeet customers do not need to have an existing, nor open a new account. Kajeet serves as a mobile data provider.
We can easily check to see if your school or district is covered by the Kajeet network. Please call us at 240-482-3500.
With Kajeet, you never have to worry about surprise bills, wasted data, or overage charges! Under the Kajeet CUSTOM Plan, you purchase your mobile data in a bundled pool for the duration of your program. That data can be shared across all devices in your program and the unused data rolls-over each month. 10% of your data rolls over from year-to-year. The service will stop once the data that you have already paid for has been used, hence, protecting you from any possible overage charges. You can easily purchase additional data (and SmartSpots) at any time during your program.
Under the Kajeet COMPLETE Plan, you purchase your data based on the number of devices activated and the number of months required for coverage. Each device is utilized by one student and you will be limited to the CIPA-compliant, education-only content your student needs to complete
Kajeet Education Broadband does not allow for roaming. Our service is only available on our network provider towers. Districts on, or near, the Canadian or Mexican borders do not have to worry about Kajeet Education Broadband service roaming on the network carriers in those countries.
Each carrier has their own specific Kajeet SmartSpot devices. You will need to contact a Kajeet Education Consultant to find out which 4G LTE network offers the best coverage and speed for you.
With the Kajeet SmartBus solution, you can add two carriers with the Dual Connect feature. Please contact a Kajeet Education Consultant for more information.
