We are now connecting students to the Internet at home in 37 school district in 20 states! More than anything, we love to hear about the children being helped with our solution.
South Carolina’s Richland Two District deployed a 1-to-1 program using Chromebooks. They estimate about 20 percent of students, based on surveys, don’t have Internet at home. Donna Teuber (pictured right), the Team Leader for Technology Integration at Richland School District 2, said with smaller percentages like this, it’s an easier obstacle to overcome. The district’s family liaison identified students who did not have Internet at home and especially those homes with multiple children where the Kajeet SmartSpot devices could connect more than one student. (Up to five mobile devices can connect via the Kajeet SmartSpot.)
The pilot program they launched at the end of last year was a success, Donna told us. Having the Internet access at home helped keep one student out of summer school and another was able to successfully graduate to the next grade. They are planning to purchase more Wi-Fi hotspots to connect more students this school year.
